MATERIALS LIST SEMESTER 2   2013

These are the materials required for your first class. As there are no shops close by, please bring snacks or lunch. BYO cup for coffee and tea.

PAINTING

Introductory Watercolour (Allin Dwyer)    

Your usual painting materials or Visual diary;  1 sheet 300gsm Watercolour paper (rough – Saunders or Arches);  roll of masking tape;  a good quality watercolour brush (round, No. 8, 10 or 12 – e.g. Roymac, imitation sable);  mixing palette;  2 water containers (e.g. plastic cups);  2B pencil;  soft eraser;  a box of tissues;  Watercolour paints:  (Winsor & Newton, Cotman brand) Cadmium Yellow Light,  Yellow Ochre,  Cadmium Red,  Alizarin Crimson,  Ultramarine Blue,  Viridian, Burnt Sienna (DO NOT BUY MARIES OR MONTMARTE PAINTS OR PAPER).

Expressive Water Media (Mia Clark)

2 sheets of 300gsm medium watercolour paper, Student quality (Cotman is a good brand) tubes of watercolour paint – red, blue and yellow (DO NOT BUY MARIES OR MONTMATRE), masking tape, scissors, drawing boards, palette with large recesses for mixing paint, tissues or paper towels, water containers x2, pencil or eraser, brushes: medium (4-6) round and large flat (8-10) and masking fluid.

Studio Expressive Water Media (Mia Clark)

Your usual painting materials.

Portraiture (Mia Clark)

2B & 6B pencils and a pencil sharpener; a Faber Castel kneadable eraser; ruler; A3 pad of cartridge paper; masking tape; a small or medium sized paper blender [torchon]; and an A4 display folder for notes (Mia will discuss other materials needed for later in the course in class).

Painting 1 ( Berenice Anzellotti)

A small range of acrylic paints (e.g. in 75ml tubes or 250ml pots, or similar): white, black, pthalo blue, crimson, lemon yellow, ultramarine blue, scarlet, cadmium yellow (or similar);  an A-5 or A-4 visual diary for note-taking, drawings and idea-gathering & a pen or pencil;  a water container;  a paint palette (e.g. one or two white ice cream lids);  a paint rag;  an old shirt to wear while painting;  a small range of bristle brushes: e.g., one each of sizes 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 in flat-ended bristle; one each of similar sizes in round-ended bristle;  a pad of A-3 size cartridge paper; mop brush x 1;  A2 cartridge paper (1 pad);  glad wrap;  paper towel;  spray bottle for water;  Artelier retarder or similar brand;  masking tape;  impasto gel medium;  1 large canvas pad A2;  1 medium palette knife;  a list of possible additional materials required for the course will be discussed by the tutor during the first class.

Painting 2 (Sally Duhig)

Papers, A4 visual diary; A2 pad of Canson (brand) oil/acrylic paper; A3 block cartridge paper; palette; palette knife; large water container (bucket); cotton rag; bristle and taklon round and flat brushes in a variety of sizes;  student quality Acrylic paint  (eg. Chromacryl or Atelier artist quality paints): - cool red, warm red, cool blue, warm blue, cool yellow, warm yellow, white, burnt sienna, yellow oxide, black; acrylic gel medium (matt or gloss); 4b pencil; eraser; masking tape; scissors; coffee cup.

Painting 3 (Sally Duhig)

Papers, A4 visual diary; A2 pad of Canson (brand) oil/acrylic paper; A3 block cartridge paper; palette; palette knife; large water container (bucket); cotton rag; bristle and taklon round and flat brushes in a variety of sizes;  student quality Acrylic paint  (eg. Chromacryl or Atelier Interactive artist quality paints): -  napthol crimson; napthol red light; arylamide yellow deep; cadmium yellow light; pthalo blue and french ultramarine blue;  +  cool red, warm red, cool blue, warm blue, cool yellow, warm yellow, white, burnt sienna, yellow oxide, black; acrylic gel medium (matt or gloss);  disposable latex or silicone gloves for use if you have a paint containing cadmium pigment;   4b pencil; eraser; masking tape; scissors; coffee cup.

Painting 1 (Robert Andrews)  OR  Painting 2 (Robert Andrews)

A small range of acrylic paints (e.g. in 75ml tubes or 250ml pots, or similar): white, black, pthalo blue, crimson, lemon yellow, ultramarine blue, scarlet, cadmium yellow (or similar);  an A-5 or A-4 visual diary for note-taking, drawings and idea-gathering & a pen or pencil;  a water container;  a paint palette (e.g. one or two white ice cream lids);  a paint rag;  an old shirt to wear while painting;  a small range of bristle brushes: e.g., one each of sizes 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 in flat-ended bristle; one each of similar sizes in round-ended bristle;  two housepainter’s brushes (e.g. 1 x 25mm and 1 x 50mm wide);  a pad of A-3 size cartridge paper; a list of additional materials required for the course will be provided by the tutor during the first class.

Painting 1 (Deborah Cavallaro)

A4 Visual diary;  1 large canvas pad A2 size (10 sheets);  flat bristle hog hair brushes - No.s 12, 8, 6, 4, 2, 0;  Taklon brushes - ¾ , ½, ¼, 1/8 inch;  large area bristle brush - 2 inches wide;  Acrylic paints: - 500ml tub white, 250ml tubes of cool yellow, warm yellow, warm red, cool red, warm blue, cool blue, raw umber, black, paynes grey (No Mont Marte or Art Culture paints please);  1 container of impasto gel medium;  1 container of texture paste;  I bottle Atelier clear painting medium;  Atelier liquefying  medium;  flat palette with wells and disposable plastic plates; Gladwrap and paper towel;  spray bottle for water;  water container (e.g. large yogurt container);  rags;  small disposable plastic containers for mixing paint;  masking tape;  1 medium palette knife for mixing and painting.

Towards Abstraction (Sally Cox) 

Your usual painting materials and at least 10 large sheets of cartridge or canvas paper  to paint on.

Painting 2 (Nameer Davis)

5 Brushes from size 0 up to 25 mm;  palette knife or putty knife; Acrylic paints student quality: minimum requirement – red, blue, yellow, black, white, raw umber, Gel medium (gloss or matt); Painting surfaces: - 2 sheets of canvas embossed paper A1 size OR A3 Canson oil/acrylic painting pad; 1 litre water container; ; painting cloth or paper towel; plastic palette with large and small recesses for mixing paint; (if you think you may have any skin allergies to acrylic paint, please bring disposable latex gloves or rubber gloves).

Creative Portraiture (David Paulson)

Charcoal and oil pastels; cartridge paper; odourless turps;  paint rags (all will be needed for the first few classes).

Understanding Composition (Jill Barker)

Materials to bring to the first class: Notebook and pen;  A4 or larger sketch book;  Pencils to sketch with;  [During the semester you will also need a range of materials such as:  Scissors;  ruler.;  Any 2D medium you are familiar with;  Watercolour &/or gouache paints – a few basic colours;  Acrylic paints, mediums etc. or oil paints if you have used them before;  Paper, boards or canvas suitable for acrylic or oil paint.]

DRAWING

Expressive Drawing (Sally Cox) For the first class please bringlots of cartridge paper, soft pencils, charcoal – willow and compressed.  Bull dog clips, eraser and any other drawing materials you already have.

Observational Drawing Skills (Geoff Ginn)

Butcher's paper/newsprint (10 full sheets); cartridge paper (5 full A3 sheets); 2 pencils (from range 2B-9B); charcoal (compressed or willow); bulldog clips (at least 2); rags (1 or 2); elastic bands for rolling paper; other mark making materials as desired.

Drawing the Human Figure (Geoff Ginn)

Butcher's paper/newsprint (10 full sheets); cartridge paper (5 full A3 sheets); 2 pencils (from range 2B-9B); charcoal (compressed or willow); bulldog clips (at least 2); rags (1 or 2); elastic bands for rolling paper; other mark making materials as desired.

Exploring Drawing: from the expected to the unexpected (Nicole Sylvestre)

lots of paper A4 and A3 cartridge quality, a few A4,A3 sheets of heavier, watercolour quality.
Soft pencils(2B, 4B or 6B), biros, markers, erasers, masking tape, drawing inks( black and 2 other colours) plain household candle, conte, compressed charcoal and an open mind.

Drawing the Human Figure (Frances McKennariey)

2 sticks willow charcoal;  1 x compressed charcoal;  a 3B pencil;  a kneadable eraser or plain eraser;  butchers paper - about a dozen pages; 12 sheets A1 cartridge paper or pad;  2 bulldog clips;  a sketch book or note book for notes;  and a teacup for the teabreak.

PRINTMAKING

Introductory Printmaking (Nancy Brown)

[The following items are available from Oxlades 3846 0611 fax 3846 0622 www.Oxlades.com.au]:  a dry point plate Mylar [these come in assorted sizes];  a lino plate [these also come in assorted sizes];  a set of basic lino cutting tools;  papers [BFK Rives;  Arches Vellum 250GSM or other 250gsm printing paper];  acid free tissue paper [5 sheets];  rubber gloves;  clean cotton rags;  large sketchbook and drawing materials;  craft knife;  scissors;  towel.

Fabric Printing (Nancy Brown)

2 metres of cotton or poly-cotton fabric;  scissors;  rags;  rubber or disposable gloves;  A4 sketch book plus choice of drawing materials;  cutting blade & cutting mat (optional); Please wear closed in shoes.

Introductory Printmaking (David Nixon)

The following items are available from Oxlades Valley (3252 8238) and/or Oxlades Southbank (3846 0611). The Art Shed (3846 1330) also sells some of these items.  Bring two or more dry point Mylar (plastic) plates (15cmx10cm or larger) for the first class of monoprinting, and for later in the semester for drypoint;  lino plates (15cmx15cm or larger), and a copper etching plate (15x10cm or larger);  Japanese veneer boards and magnolia woodplates are options;  a set of Speedball lino cutting tools and a drypoint etching needle;  various printmaking paper (240GSM or heavier), such as Canson edition all purpose printmaking paper, Fabriano Tiepolo, BFK Rives, Arches Vellum, Stonehenge or Hahnumuhle;  also bring a cutting blade and mat (optional); scissors; rags; rubber or disposable gloves; sketch book and basic drawing materials. Please wear closed in shoes, and clothes or apron to suit use with provided oil based inks.

Etching (Carolyn Craig)

Notebook & pen; an etching plate (size = approx.  120 – 150 x 100mm); a small fine tooth bastard file.
